Right to Housing

So much so that in this current struggle in Paraná, where we're defending that the occupation not be evicted, we took a stand to prevent the eviction, to keep the occupation, and the page of Unidade Popular do Paraná was taken down.

So much so that our organizing — the struggle movement in neighborhoods, villages and favelas — also organized within Unidade Popular and fights for housing.

Not to be put on some list that the city hall makes where a person waits for 500 years.

A dignified home, but to say it's possible, because there are more empty houses than people needing housing, there are more built spaces than people needing housing.

Brazil wouldn't need to build another house, not another house, if the closed spaces were used, if closed spaces were renovated to guarantee housing.

So we've been carrying out occupations in defense of housing.

In fact, let me record, give a shout-out to our Francisco Bernardo occupation in Paraná, which was unfortunately evicted this week by the Federal Police — several families, dozens of organized families were put out on the street with nowhere to go.

Also, I went to Francisco Bernardo on this trip around Brazil, and I met a little 10-year-old boy named Jonathan, and he spoke at our pre-candidacy presentation event, and it's something I say — it even gives me chills — I have a six-year-old son, and you see a 10-year-old child having to think about happiness, having to think about food, having to think about housing, and he said that that day he was a happy child because he had the occupation, because in the occupation he could eat.
